It began during the days of teenage discos, bad haircuts and chronic debs dresses, somewhere amongst the green fields and traffic lights of Galway city - where an unlikely storm was brewing. Washed ashore by the waves of the Atlantic Ocean, a red haired veteran of Inis Mór, (the largest of the Aran Islands), Rónán Ó Flaithearta met Jamie Murray. They soon took to the cobbled streets of Galway city with a mutual interest in music and in songwriting. The band would later be called ROFI JAMES - a portmanteau of Ronan's nickname "Rofi-J" and Jamie's actual name, "James".
Rofi James soon began to replace the cold concrete of Shop Street with the local stages of Galway city and in doing so, went on to take the First Place Title at the NUIG Witless battle of the bands 2013, performing their own music, which was an encouraging sign for the then acoustic duo.Following this win and subsequently a debut single release, RJ started to build a name for themselves on the local scene with well received gigs, supporting artists such as O.R.B, Mundy, The Amazing Apples, Ham Sandwhich and many more.
Some time passed and they began to expand from their acoustic roots, never completely forgetting where it all started. Whilst juggling college with the demands of student life, in an effort to help expand their musical footprint and to ultimately reach new ears they entered iRadio's national battle of the bands competition. After a string of live finals they were ultimately awarded the First place title of iRadio's iRocks battle of the bands champions 2013. Now a quartet, including Ronan(Rofi), Jamie (James), Cathal Leonard and Joseph Flaherty - Rofi James have have been gathering a strong following in the West of Ireland following the success of their debut singles ‘Fool For Your Love’ , ‘Open Eyes’ (with Best Single nominations), including their most recent release 'Reason'. The band have played several high profile support slots with established acts including Picture This, Hermitage Green, and Ryan Sheridan. They have also co-headlined several festivals including RIVERFEST 2018 alongside Irish band LE GALAXIE and have had several sell out headline shows following their debut appearance at Electric Picnic 2017.
The bands music has received national radio play, while being placed on High Rotation on several radio stations across the country. The bands debut single 'Fool For Your Love; was one of the Top 10 Most Requested Tracks in February 2017 on iRadio, while their second release 'Open Eyes’ was selected as a winning track in the RTÉ 2fm #PlayThePicnic competition 2017.
The bands current single 'REASON' has hit NO.3 in the Radiomonitor Breaking Irish Music Airplay Charts alongside All Tvinns, U2 and Chasing Abbey and has been featured as Song Of The Day by JOE.ie, HOTPRESS.ie and IMRO.ie since its release in December 2017 and has been playlisted by iRadio, BEAT 102 103, Ocean FM, Uradio and Galway Bay FM. Rofi James were also recently named 'Galway Band of The Year 2017' by The Galway Advertiser and are currently touring. On Friday November 9th 2018 ROFI JAMES brand new single ‘I TRIED’ goes live across all digital platforms and streaming services. ‘I TRIED’ is the first single from the bands forthcoming 5 track debut EP titled ‘HELIUM’ - set for release in late November 2018..
